Parenting a Toddler - How to Enjoy Your 2-3 Year Old

Parenting a toddler is one of the most rewarding and one of the most difficult jobs. Your child is beginning to talk and becoming more independent, but still needs you constantly. If you are at home all day with your toddler, the only real break you get is when he or she is taking a nap.

First, you need to realize this is a very important time in the life of your child. What you do now will make it easier or more difficult to live with them when they reach the teen years. You will want to make the right choices so that you are able to make them grow into a great and productive child, teen, and adult.

This is the time when you can be developing a great relationship with your child. You want to use the best parenting tips for toddlers so that you are able to have a well-balanced and successful relationship with your child now and for the rest of his/her life.

It is very important that you set rules for your toddler. You will want them to know from the beginning that they have to follow rules and listen to their parents at all times. It is very important to clearly communicate with your toddler so they know the difference between right and wrong.

Parenting a toddler can be very frustrating, but it is extremely important that your frustration not show. You want to stay calm and cool. Make sure that you are thinking before you act and using the best methods that you can think of when it comes to discipline. You want them to know that you are enforcing the rules but you do not want to be too harsh with your child.

Keep in mind that children are different. Some children need very little discipline, while others need a lot. Usually a little discipline, given in love and with patience, is enough to correct a child who has willfully been disobedient. Here are some parenting tips:

-You want to talk things out with your toddler. A favorite game at some homes is “right and wrong.” A parent tells a short 15-30 second story such as, “Tom and Ben are friends. Tom wants to play with Ben’s toy car and grabs it from Ben. Was Tom right or wrong?” The correct answer, of course, would be it was wrong. As the child gets older the stories get more difficult and involved.

-You want to be constant in the parenting skills that you use when dealing with your toddler.

-Do not loose your temper when you are trying to reason with your child.

-Keep your focus and stay with it so that you are more likely to get them to settle down with the act of reasoning and not anger.

-Spend time with your child every day playing with them and working with them on things that they enjoy, such as building with Duplo blocks, playing with a wooden train set, or playing simple board or card games. Take them to fun places nearby such as the park. The important thing is that you are involved with them in activities that toddlers like to do. You are showing them that you can have fun together.

-Show your toddler from the beginning that they must respect people (especially their parents) and things. There are many people today who have no respect for the lives or property of others. By starting to teach this at a young age it will be easier to continue this attitude in your child as they get older.

Parenting a toddler is one of the most important jobs you will ever have because it is a time when a lot of your child’s future character is formed. It is demanding on your time and energy, so if you find that you need a break in order to keep your sanity, ask grandparents or friends to watch your toddler for a few hours each week (some moms exchange watching the children of each others).

These breaks will help you be a better parent and have the energy to enjoy being with your child the rest of the time. This age really does go by very fast, but it is a very important age when a good foundation can be laid that will make them a joy to be around as they get older.
