Choosing a Dog for Your Family
Do you have children who have been asking for a dog? Not every family should have a dog, but if the circumstances are right, getting a dog can be a great experience for a child.
First, what do you need to consider before choosing a dog? You need to have a yard for the dog. It is possible to have a dog in an apartment with no yard, but you will have to take the dog out for several walks every day.
If you have a small yard you will need to choose a dog that does not need a lot of room to exercise. There are some dogs that need a big yard, such as Border Collies and Australian Shepherds. These kinds of dogs go crazy if they are cooped up in a small yard.
Small dogs will be happy with a small yard and one or two walks each day. They are able to get some exercise running around the house. But a Labrador or any other large dog will need plenty of outdoor exercise.
Another thing to consider is are you willing to share your home with a dog. Dogs want to be indoors with the family and not locked up outside. Dogs that get left outside get bored, lonely, and can get into trouble.
Besides, you are getting this dog for your child. Let the dog sleep in your child's room, sit with your child as he or she watches TV, and become a great companion that your child will remember for the rest of his/her life.
Choosing a Puppy or Adult Dog
You also need to consider if you want to get a puppy or an adult. A puppy requires more work. You will have to house train him, deal with teething when the puppy will chew on everything in sight, and train him.
An adult dog might also need to be house trained, but will probably not chew on your things. It all depends on what you prefer, puppy or adult.
Whether you want a puppy or an adult dog, stay away from getting a dog at a pet shop. Reputable pet shops don't sell dogs or cats any more. They often allow shelters and rescues to bring animals into the store to offer for sale.
The best places to find a good puppy is from a good breeder (one who raises puppies to improve the breed). Good places to find adult dogs are dog rescues, animal shelters, or ads in the paper.
Whether you get a puppy or an adult, if your child has been asking for a dog, and if you are prepared to share your home with a dog, then getting a dog is great. It gives your child a friend and companion, and you will be providing a dog a loving home.
